Reddit and AI citations: how brands show up in Perplexity and ChatGPT
Reddit is 46.7% of the citations among Perplexity's top ten sources. Why AI answers lean on Reddit, and how to take part without breaking subreddit rules.

Reddit is the single most cited source in Perplexity's answers: in Profound's analysis of citations from August 2024 to June 2025, Reddit took 46.7% of the citations that went to Perplexity's ten most-cited domains, and 6.6% of all its citations. It also ranks near the top for ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews, and both Google and OpenAI signed data deals with Reddit in 2024.
That makes Reddit a place where your product is discussed whether or not you take part. Below are the numbers, why engines lean on Reddit, and how to be present in the threads that matter without self-promotion that moderators remove, checked in September 2026.
How much do AI answers cite Reddit?
A lot on Perplexity, and meaningfully on ChatGPT and AI Overviews. Profound measured 680 million citations and reported two numbers per engine: Reddit's share of all citations, and its share among each engine's ten most-cited domains. Reddit led Perplexity and AI Overviews on both measures and was second on ChatGPT behind Wikipedia.

How often does Perplexity cite Reddit?
In Profound's analysis of citations from August 2024 to June 2025, Reddit made up 46.7% of the citations among Perplexity's ten most-cited sources and 6.6% of all Perplexity citations. It was the most cited single domain on Perplexity.
The two columns answer different questions. The first says how much of everything an engine cites comes from Reddit. The second says how dominant Reddit is among the handful of domains the engine uses most. The widely quoted "46.7%" is the second kind, so read it as "Reddit is by far Perplexity's favourite domain," not "half of every Perplexity answer is Reddit."
The picture also depends on the question. Yext's study of 6.8 million citations across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity used location-based consumer queries in retail, finance, healthcare and food, and found "Reddit and similar platforms accounted for just 2% of citations" there. In Profound's lists Reddit sits beside review and technology sources such as G2, Gartner and PCMag, which is the territory of product comparisons, so check which source types your own buyers' questions actually pull in.
Why do AI engines lean on Reddit?
Two reasons show up in public sources: Reddit threads are first-hand discussions that answer exactly the questions people put to AI, and Reddit licensed its content to both Google and OpenAI in 2024. The licensing gave both companies structured, real-time access to Reddit through its Data API.
The deals, in each company's words:
Google, February 22, 2024: "Google now has access to Reddit's Data API, which delivers real-time, structured, unique content," and will use it to "display, train on, and otherwise use it in the most accurate and relevant ways."
OpenAI, May 16, 2024: "OpenAI will bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products," accessing Reddit's Data API so that its AI tools "better understand" Reddit content, "especially on recent topics."
The content itself fits what engines look for. Google's guide to generative AI features says "a first-hand review provides a unique perspective based on personal experience," and says its AI features can show "what's being said about products and services across the web, including in blogs, videos, and forum discussions." A thread where ten users compare tools is that kind of source.
How do you find the Reddit threads that matter for your product?
Find the threads engines already cite for your buyers' questions, and the threads that rank in Google for your category. Those are the conversations answers are built from, so a helpful reply there is worth more than a new post nobody sees.
Write the questions a buyer asks before they know your name, such as "best invoicing app for freelance designers."
Ask each one in Perplexity and open its sources. Note every Reddit thread it cites and which products those threads recommend.
Search Google for the same questions with site:reddit.com added. Note threads on the first page.
List the subreddits those threads live in. That list, not a generic "post on Reddit" plan, is where you spend time.
For each subreddit, open the rules in the sidebar or the About tab before you write anything.
What are Reddit's rules on promoting your own product?
Reddit's platform rules allow you to talk about what you built, as long as you participate authentically and don't spam. Rule 2 says: "Participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors (including content manipulation)." Each subreddit then sets its own rules on top.
Rule 5 adds: "Be authentic. You don't have to use your real name, but do not intentionally mislead others." Posing as a happy customer, or asking friends to upvote your reply, breaks both rules. Reddit lists enforcement from "Asking you nicely to knock it off" through "Removal of content" to "Temporary or permanent suspension of accounts."
Subreddit rules sit on top of those and differ from one community to the next. Reddit's own rules page tells users to follow "the rules of communities in which you participate," and moderators enforce them. There is no shortcut: read the rules of each subreddit on your list, including anything they say about self-promotion, links or where promotional posts belong, and when in doubt, message the moderators before you post.
How do you take part without getting removed?
Answer the question that was asked, say that you built the product, and mention it only where it fits. A reply that solves the poster's problem first and names alternatives honestly survives moderation and reads well to the next person, and to the engine that later summarises the thread.
Reply to the question in the thread, fully, before your product comes up.
Disclose plainly: "I built X, so I'm biased." Hiding the connection is the fastest way to lose the thread.
Name the situations where your product is not the right choice, and what is.
Link only if the subreddit allows it, and only once.
Use one account that you use normally, with a history in the community beyond your product.
Never ask anyone to vote. Coordinated voting is the content manipulation Rule 2 names.
If you want to post your own thread, such as a launch or an AMA, check whether the subreddit allows it and on which days. How to plan a launch on Reddit is covered in how to promote an app on Reddit.
What should you do when a Reddit thread gets your product wrong?
Reply in the thread with the correction, say who you are, and point to the public page that shows the right fact. Old threads keep being read by people and by engines, so an outdated claim about your pricing or features can resurface in an AI answer long after you changed it. A calm correction in the same thread is the fix that travels with the original claim.
Quote the specific claim and correct it in one sentence, for example "The free plan now includes three projects, not one."
Disclose your role in the same reply.
Link to the page that states the fact, such as your pricing or changelog, if the subreddit allows links.
Do not ask for the thread to be removed because it is unflattering. Moderators remove rule breaks, not criticism.
Make sure your own site states the corrected fact clearly, because that page is what an engine checks the thread against.
If the wrong claim shows up in ChatGPT or Perplexity answers, trace it to the page the engine cited and fix it there as well; the method is in ChatGPT describes your product wrong.
How do you tell whether Reddit is helping your AI visibility?
Re-run your buyer questions monthly in Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google, and record which Reddit threads each engine cites and whether your product is named in them. The goal is to see your product appear in the threads engines already use, and then in the answers built from those threads.
Keep the rest of your footprint in view. Reddit is one source type among several; reviews, listings and videos are others, and Ahrefs found branded web mentions across the web correlated with AI visibility at 0.66 to 0.71, as covered in brand mentions vs backlinks for AI visibility. Perplexity also needs to reach your own site. Its documentation says PerplexityBot "is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models, recommends allowing it in robots.txt and permitting its published IP ranges, and says changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect. The Perplexity side is in how to get cited by Perplexity, and the monthly method is in how to measure AI visibility.
See whether your brand shows up on Reddit and in the answers
LaunchScaler's full audit checks Reddit presence as one of its AI visibility signals, alongside YouTube, X and review-site presence, and runs the answer-engine panel: 10 buyer questions put to 7 engines, 70 answers read, with the competitors each answer names. It costs $19 once for your domain and unlocks on your report after a free scan. Run the free scan first, then open the full audit.
Yes. Reddit and OpenAI announced a partnership in May 2024 under which OpenAI accesses Reddit's Data API to bring Reddit content to ChatGPT. In Profound's data Reddit was ChatGPT's second most cited source among its top ten, behind Wikipedia.
03
Can I promote my product on Reddit?
Only within Reddit's rules and each subreddit's rules. Reddit's platform rules ask you to participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest and not to spam or manipulate content, and each subreddit can set stricter rules of its own.
04
Why do AI engines cite Reddit so much?
Reddit threads are first-person discussions of products and problems, which is the kind of perspective AI answers summarise, and Reddit has licensed its data to Google and OpenAI through its Data API since 2024.
05
Is Reddit important for every kind of query?
No. Yext's study of 6.8 million citations for location-based consumer queries found Reddit and similar forums were only 2% of citations there. Check which sources your own buyers' questions pull in before investing in Reddit.
