Does schema markup help AI search? What the evidence says
Google says AI features need no special schema. What controlled studies show about schema and AI citations, and the six types a SaaS site actually needs.

Schema markup helps search engines understand a page, but the evidence that it makes AI answers cite you more is weak. Google says structured data "isn't required for generative AI search" while still recommending it, and the one controlled study of pages that added JSON-LD found no clear citation lift in AI Overviews, AI Mode or ChatGPT.
That does not make schema useless. It makes it a precision tool: it states facts about your company and product in a form no system has to guess at. Below is what each source actually shows, checked in September 2026, and the six types a SaaS site should carry.
What does Google say about schema and AI features?
Google says you need no special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Its AI features page states, "There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add," and its generative AI guide lists "Overfocusing on structured data" among things to ignore, while adding that it's "a good idea to continue using it" for rich results.
Two other lines from Google explain what schema is for. Its introduction to structured data says Google uses markup "to understand the content of the page, as well as to gather information about the web and the world in general, such as information about the people, books, or companies that are included in the markup." And its AI features page repeats one rule that matters more than any type choice: make sure "your structured data matches the visible text on the page."
Bing takes a similar position for Copilot. Its webmaster guidelines say structured data "may support clearer grounding but does not guarantee visibility or grounding traffic" and that "Markup must accurately reflect visible content."
What does the research show about schema and AI citations?
Correlation studies find schema on most cited pages; the controlled study finds adding it changes little. The difference is the usual one: well-run sites add schema and also do everything else that earns citations. The table sets the main findings side by side, each with the limit its authors state.

01
Does schema markup help with AI search?
It helps search engines understand a page, but the evidence that it raises AI citations is weak. Google says structured data isn't required for its generative AI features, and an Ahrefs study of 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD found no clear citation increase in AI Overviews, AI Mode or ChatGPT.
1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026, against 4,000 matched control pages
AI Overviews citations −4.6% relative to controls; AI Mode +2.4% and ChatGPT +2.2%, both statistically indistinguishable from zero
Pages were already heavily cited; 30-day window; all schema types pooled
AccuraCast, September 2025
Schema on about 9,000 sources cited in answers to 2,000+ prompts on ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity
81% of cited pages had schema, but the authors concluded schema "does not necessarily correlate to improved gen AI search visibility"; FAQPage appeared on 1.8% of cited sources
Observational
searchVIU, October 2025
Whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Mode read a test page's JSON-LD when fetching it live
None extracted a price that existed only in JSON-LD; they read visible HTML
Tests live fetching only, not indexing or training
Volpini et al., arXiv, March 2026
Retrieval accuracy in a controlled RAG setup across four domains
"JSON-LD markup alone provides only modest improvements"; an enhanced entity page with agent instructions and breadcrumbs gained 29.6% in standard RAG
A lab retrieval system, not ChatGPT or Google
The paper is the one vendors quote most, usually as "schema improves AI accuracy by 30%." Read the abstract: the 29.6% gain came from an enhanced entity page format with breadcrumbs, interlinked entities and "llms.txt-style agent instructions," while plain JSON-LD gave "only modest improvements." It is evidence that well-structured, linked pages help retrieval systems, not that adding a script tag raises citations.
searchVIU's own caveat is worth keeping too: schema "could very well be used" when search engines index a page, which is how AI Overviews and Copilot get their data. The live-fetch test only rules out one path.
What do vendors claim that the evidence does not support?
Most claims about schema and AI stretch a correlation into a cause. The honest reading of the studies above is narrower: schema describes a page precisely, some systems use it during indexing, and nothing yet shows that adding it moves citations on its own. The common claims map to the evidence like this.
Claim
What the evidence supports
"Schema is required to appear in AI Overviews"
Google says no special schema is needed
"81% of AI-cited pages use schema, so add schema"
The same study's authors concluded schema does not necessarily correlate with visibility
"FAQ schema gets you into AI answers"
FAQPage was on 1.8% of cited sources in AccuraCast's data, and Google no longer shows FAQ rich results
"JSON-LD boosts AI accuracy by about 30%"
That figure came from an enhanced entity page; JSON-LD alone gave modest gains
"ChatGPT reads your JSON-LD"
In searchVIU's live-fetch test it read visible HTML only
Does broken JSON-LD count as no schema at all?
For that block, yes. A JSON syntax error, such as a trailing comma or an unclosed brace, means the block cannot be parsed, so none of it is read. Markup that parses but lacks a required property is ineligible for its rich result. Google's structured data troubleshooting points to the Unparsable structured data report for the first case.
Check every block before and after deploying:
Run the page through the Rich Results Test and fix critical errors.
Run the same code through the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org.
In Search Console, open the Unparsable structured data report and any enhancement reports for the types you use.
Recheck after template changes, because one bad variable in a template breaks the markup on every page that uses it.
Because most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. Vercel's measurements found that "none of the major AI crawlers currently render JavaScript," naming OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. Google can read JSON-LD that JavaScript injects, so a tag manager setup can pass Google's tests and still be invisible to every other crawler.
Put the <script type="application/ld+json"> in the HTML your server returns. In frameworks like Next.js, Nuxt or Astro, render it in the page or layout component on the server. Then fetch the page with curl and search the raw response for application/ld+json. If it is not in that output, a non-rendering crawler will not see it.
Which schema types does a SaaS website need?
Six types cover a typical software company: Organization and WebSite on the home page, SoftwareApplication on the product page, Article or BlogPosting on posts, BreadcrumbList on deep pages, and FAQPage only where a real FAQ exists. Each has its own rules in Google's documentation.
Type
Where it goes
What Google documents
Watch out for
Organization
Home page or About page
Helps Google understand your details and disambiguate your company; no required properties
Everything in it must appear on the page
WebSite
Home page
name and url indicate your preferred site name; Google calls it the most important signal for that
Keep name identical to Organization's
SoftwareApplication
Product or pricing page
Requires name, offers.price (set to 0 if free) and either aggregateRating or review
Only use ratings you actually show on the page
Article or BlogPosting
Each post
No required properties; recommends headline, author, datePublished, dateModified, image
Dates must match the visible date
BreadcrumbList
Pages below the home page
Google's changelog says breadcrumbs appear on desktop results only
Mirror the breadcrumb shown on the page
FAQPage
A page with a visible FAQ
Still valid schema.org, but Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026
Access, text and reputation move them more. An AI engine first has to reach the page, then read its text, then trust it enough to cite it. Schema helps with none of those three if the basics are missing, so fix them first and treat markup as the last layer of precision on a page that already works.
In order:
Let the retrieval bots in. OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot each need to be allowed by robots.txt and not challenged by your firewall.
Put the words in the HTML. A page whose text only appears after JavaScript runs is empty to most AI crawlers, with or without markup.
Answer questions in passages that stand alone: a heading phrased as the question, then a direct answer in the first sentences.
Get described elsewhere. In Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study, branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility far more strongly than link metrics did.
Once those hold, schema does its real job: telling every system, without ambiguity, what your company is called, what your product costs and when a page was last updated. The full sequence is in how to optimize for AI search.

Do ChatGPT and Perplexity read JSON-LD?
Not when they fetch a page live, in one test. searchVIU found that ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode ignored prices that existed only in JSON-LD and read only the visible HTML. Schema may still be used earlier, when search indexes process the page.
03
What schema types does a SaaS website need?
Organization and WebSite on the home page, SoftwareApplication on the product or pricing page, Article or BlogPosting on posts, and BreadcrumbList on deeper pages. FAQPage is optional, because Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026.
04
Is broken structured data worse than none?
It is the same as none for that block. A JSON syntax error means the block cannot be parsed at all, and markup missing required properties is ineligible for the rich result it targets.
05
Should I add schema with JavaScript or in the HTML?
In the HTML the server sends. Google can read JSON-LD injected by JavaScript, but most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so markup added client-side is invisible to them.
