How to rank in Google AI Mode, and how it differs from AI Overviews
AI Mode splits a question into many searches and cites pages that answer each part. Be indexed, answer every sub-question, and track it apart from AIO.

To rank in Google AI Mode, a page must first be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search, the same bar as any search result. AI Mode then breaks each question into subtopics and runs many searches at once, so the pages it cites are the ones that answer those sub-questions directly, from brands the web already talks about by name.
That changes the job. You are not optimising one page for one query. You are making sure every question a buyer asks on the way to a decision has a page on your site that answers it, and that other sites name you when they discuss the category.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a Google Search experience for questions that need "further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons," in Google's words. Instead of ten blue links it returns an AI-written answer with links to supporting websites, and Google says it lets people "go deeper through follow-up questions."
Google's May 2025 announcement said AI Mode would "start to roll out for everyone in the U.S.," running on a custom version of Gemini 2.5. It sits beside AI Overviews rather than replacing them. AI Overviews appear inside normal results only when Google decides they add something, and Google says they "often don't trigger." AI Mode is a mode the searcher chooses, so a response is generated every time.
For site owners, Google's guidance is the same for both: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." What differs is how each one picks sources.
How does query fan-out decide which pages AI Mode pulls in?
Query fan-out is Google's name for splitting one question into subtopics and issuing many searches in parallel. Google describes AI Mode as "breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf," then combining what those searches return into one answer. Every sub-search is another chance for a page to be retrieved.
Deep Search, the research feature inside AI Mode, takes the same technique further. Google says it "can issue hundreds of searches" and assemble a fully cited report in minutes.
For a buying question, it might split like this. The sub-queries are an illustration, since Google does not publish the searches it runs:

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
Google says the two "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary." Ahrefs measured how much: comparing AI Mode and AI Overview answers for the same queries, only 13.7% of cited URLs overlapped, even though the answers meant nearly the same thing.
Ahrefs analysed September 2025 US data, 730,000 query pairs for content and 540,000 for citations. The main differences:

Two conclusions follow. AI Mode names more companies per answer, so a product has more room to appear in it than in a one-paragraph Overview. And being cited in one feature says little about the other, which is why they have to be tracked separately. The guide to getting cited in Google AI Overviews covers the Overview side.
What does AI Mode require from your site?
AI Mode uses Search's own eligibility: the page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google adds that you don't need machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema. The controls that remove you are the ordinary Search ones, and Google-Extended is not one of them.
Check these before any content work:
URL Inspection in Search Console reports the page as indexed.
robots.txt allows Googlebot, and your CDN or firewall does not challenge it. Google names "any CDN or hosting infrastructure" as part of allowing crawling.
The page carries no nosnippet and no restrictive max-snippet. Google's robots meta documentation says nosnippet stops content being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and max-snippet limits how much is used.
The answer is in the HTML as text, not in an image, a PDF or a tab that loads on click.
Blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt does not take you out of AI Mode. Google's AI features guide says robots.txt directives for Googlebot are the control for Search, and Google-Extended governs training and grounding in Google's other systems.
How do you cover the sub-questions a buyer asks?
Map the questions a buyer asks before choosing, then give each one a page that answers it in its first paragraph. Fan-out retrieves pages per sub-question, so coverage matters more than polishing one page. Five steps get most sites there.
Write down the three or four head questions a buyer types, such as "best X for Y" or "X vs Z."
Under each, list the sub-questions they lead to: price, integrations, security, fit for a specific team size or industry, setup time, limits and alternatives.
Assign every sub-question to one URL. Where no page exists, that is the gap to fill first.
Open each page with a 40 to 60 word answer to its question, stating the number, the limit or the condition, then give the detail.
Link the pages to each other with descriptive anchor text, so a crawler that finds one finds the rest.
Honest comparison and alternatives pages earn their place here. AI Mode names 3.3 entities per answer on average, which means it is assembling a shortlist; a page that states plainly where your product fits and where a competitor fits better gives it a sourced reason to include you. How to optimize for AI search covers the passage structure in detail.
Why do brand signals matter more in AI Mode?
In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, AI Mode showed stronger correlations with brand signals than ChatGPT or AI Overviews did. Branded search volume correlated 0.466 with AI Mode visibility against 0.392 for AI Overviews, and branded web mentions correlated 0.709 against 0.656. Ahrefs calls AI Mode something close to a consensus engine.

Ahrefs is careful to add that "correlation isn't causation." Branded search volume is a result of being known, not a lever you pull directly. What you can do is earn the mentions that produce it: reviews, comparison articles, listings and community threads that name your product in its category. The comparison of brand mentions and backlinks for AI explains why a plain mention can count for more than a link.
How do you track AI Mode separately?
Search Console includes AI Mode in the Performance report's Web search type with no separate filter, so tracking it means reading the answers. Keep a fixed list of 20 to 30 buyer questions, run each one in AI Mode and in regular Search once a month, and record every URL each answer cites, yours and competitors'.
Keep the two logs apart. With a 13.7% citation overlap, a win in AI Overviews says almost nothing about AI Mode. Record the date, the exact question, whether you were named, whether you were linked, and which competitors were named. A mention without a link still matters, because AI Mode answers are shortlists. The guide to measuring AI visibility covers sampling and how many runs make a trend.
See which buyer questions AI Mode answers without you
Tracking by hand works for a handful of questions. LaunchScaler's full audit does the sampling for you once: for $19, one time, it puts 10 buyer questions for your category to 7 answer engines, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews among them alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot, and reads all 70 answers. It shows which answers cite you, which competitors they name instead, and your share of those answers, and it adds 20 backlink checks and two branded signals, branded search demand and branded anchor text. It unlocks on your report after the free scan, which checks the eligibility side first: robots.txt blocks, noindex, canonicals and content that only renders with JavaScript. Run the free scan first, then open the full audit.
Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links vary. Ahrefs compared them on the same queries and found only 13.7% of cited URLs overlapped, and AI Mode named about 3.3 entities per answer against 1.3 for AI Overviews.
03
Do I need special markup to rank in AI Mode?
No. The requirement is the same as for Search: the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements and no special schema to add.
04
Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?
Only inside the total. Google includes AI Mode and AI Overviews in the Performance report under the Web search type, with no separate filter, so tracking AI Mode citations means checking the answers yourself.
05
Does branded search volume affect AI Mode?
It correlates with it. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded search volume correlated 0.466 with AI Mode visibility, and branded web mentions correlated 0.709. Ahrefs notes that correlation is not causation.
