Entity SEO for a new brand: get Google and AI to recognise you
Entity SEO makes search engines and AI models treat your company as one known thing. A one-week plan: one name, schema, matching profiles, Wikidata.

Entity SEO is the work of making search engines and AI models recognise your company as one specific thing, with one name and one set of facts, instead of a word that could mean many things. For a new brand it comes down to five steps: one exact name and one-line description used everywhere, Organization schema with sameAs on your home page, profiles on other sites that repeat the same facts, a Wikidata item once you qualify, and mentions that use your name.
All five fit in a week for a two-person team. The plan below takes them in order, with what Google, Bing and the research say about each, checked in September 2026.
What is an entity in SEO?
An entity is a distinct, identifiable thing, such as a company, a person or a product, that a search system can store facts about and tell apart from things with similar names. Google says it uses structured data to "gather information about the web and the world in general, such as information about the people, books, or companies" in the markup. Your job is to make your company's entry unambiguous.
Bing states the same goal for Copilot in plain terms. Its webmaster guidelines tell site owners to "Use clear and consistent naming for people, organizations, products, and locations," to "Avoid ambiguous references," and say that "Clear entity definition improves grounding visibility and citation accuracy." Microsoft's AI Performance announcement adds a related instruction: align "text, images, and video so they consistently represent the same entities."
Why do new brands struggle to be recognised?
Because a new name has no history. It may collide with a common word or an older company, AI models may have been trained before you existed, and your own description tends to change as the product changes. The result is an engine that either does not know you or confuses you with something else.
The research shows how much of recognition is borrowed from the wider web. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded search volume correlated with AI visibility at 0.352 in ChatGPT, 0.392 in AI Overviews and 0.466 in AI Mode, and branded anchors (links whose text is your name) at 0.511 to 0.628. Ahrefs called AI Mode a kind of "consensus engine" that favours brands people already know, and found ChatGPT the least gated by established authority. Correlation is not causation, as Ahrefs notes, but the signals are all forms of other people using your name.

01
What does entity SEO mean?
Entity SEO is the work of making search engines and AI models recognise your company as one specific thing, with one name and consistent facts, rather than a string of words that could mean several things. It relies on consistent naming, structured data and corroboration from other sites.
Day 1: which name and description should you use everywhere?
Pick one exact name and one sentence that says what the company is, then use both unchanged on every page and profile. Consistency is the whole point: an engine matching facts across sites needs the same string in each place. Decide the capitalisation, spacing and whether a descriptor is part of the name, and write it down.
Choose the name form. If the bare name is a common word, pair it with a category word everywhere, for example "Beacon Invoicing" rather than "Beacon."
Write the description as one sentence: what the product is, who it is for, and the one thing that separates it. For example: "Beacon Invoicing is invoicing software for freelance designers that chases late payments automatically."
Put the sentence on your home page, near the top, in plain HTML.
Use the same sentence on your About page, in your meta description where it fits, and in every profile bio you control.
Make a list of every place the old wording lives. Old launch posts, directory listings and slide decks are where contradictions hide.
Day 2: how do you publish Organization schema with sameAs?
Add one Organization JSON-LD block to your home page with your exact name, URL, logo, the description from day 1 and a sameAs list of your official profiles, plus a WebSite block with the same name. Google says Organization markup helps it "disambiguate your organization in search results," and calls WebSite markup the most important signal for your site name.
Google says to use "the same name and alternateName that you're using for your site name," so the two name values must match. Every property explained, with the validation steps, is in Organization schema markup.
Day 3: which profiles corroborate your company?
The profiles that corroborate you are the ones that describe your company by name on sites engines already trust: a LinkedIn company page, a Crunchbase organization profile, a GitHub organization if you ship code, your X account, and listings in directories relevant to your category. Each should carry the same name, description, logo and website URL as your own site.
Profile
What to set
Why it matters
LinkedIn company page
Exact name, the day 1 sentence, website URL, founding year, logo
A structured company record that lists founding date and founders
GitHub organization
Display name, description, website link
Ties code and docs to the same entity
X account
Display name, bio with the day 1 sentence, website link
A public profile with a bio and a link back to your site
Category directories and launch listings
Name, description, website, category
Independent pages that describe what you do
Directory listings count when they describe you accurately. LaunchScaler's free listing, for example, builds a permanent listing from your URL and writes its About section from your own site, so it repeats the facts your pages state.
Then add each profile URL to the sameAs list from day 2. A profile that exists but is not listed there, or is listed but describes an old version of the product, weakens the match.
Day 4: should you create a Wikidata item?
Create one only if your company meets Wikidata's notability policy. An item needs a sitelink to a Wikimedia page, or must be "a clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity that can be described using serious and publicly available references," or must fill a structural need. Independent coverage in news or trade publications is what usually satisfies the second test.
If you qualify, the item gives your company a stable ID, a Q-ID, with statements such as official website and inception, which you then add to sameAs. If you do not qualify yet, skip this day and spend it on the mentions work below. The full process, including the references that keep an item from deletion, is in how to create a Wikidata entry for your company.
Day 5: what if Google already shows a knowledge panel?
If a knowledge panel appears for your company name, verify that you represent it and use Suggest edits to correct it. Google says panels are generated "automatically based on public information on the web," that its "current policy doesn't manually create or delete Knowledge Panels," and that verified feedback can be prioritised.
To submit verified feedback, sign in with the Google Account you verified, search for your company, click Suggest edits at the top of the panel, click Edit next to the wrong item, describe what is wrong and add public URLs that support the correction, then Send. Google says it reviews verified feedback "within a few days." Once verified, it says some corrections, "like links to social profiles," can be made directly. If no panel exists, you cannot request one; the steps above are what produce one over time.
How do you check that engines recognise your company?
Ask them. Put your exact name into ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Google, and ask each for a one-sentence description of the company. Compare each answer with your day 1 sentence. Wrong category, wrong pricing model or a confusion with another company tells you which source still carries the old or ambiguous facts.
Track branded demand alongside. In Search Console's Performance report, filter queries containing your name and watch whether they grow and whether the category word starts to appear with it. When an engine gets you wrong, trace the error to the page it came from; the method is in ChatGPT describes your product wrong.
What builds the entity after the first week?
Other people using your name. Reviews, comparison articles, podcast pages, community answers and videos that mention you by name are what the correlations point to, and links that use your name as anchor text count twice: as a mention and as a branded anchor. Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlating at 0.66 to 0.71 with AI visibility.
Earn them honestly. Google's generative AI guide says that "seeking inauthentic 'mentions' across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem," because its ranking systems favour quality while other systems block spam. Where a young company should earn its first mentions is covered in brand mentions vs backlinks for AI visibility.
Get the entity work done by hand
LaunchScaler's SEO / GEO / backlink boost does this work for you across four workstreams: guest placements on real sites, structured-data fixes including Organization and WebSite schema, answer-engine optimization including an llms.txt, and technical off-page clean-up. It is scoped to your site and quoted per project, from $299, and it never fabricates signals or buys spam links. Send an inquiry and you get a scope and a quote within one business day: Talk to us.
Take a hypothetical startup called 'Beacon', a name that is also a common word. It uses the exact name 'Beacon Invoicing' everywhere, publishes Organization schema whose sameAs lists its LinkedIn, GitHub and Crunchbase pages, keeps the same one-line description on each, and earns articles that describe it the same way.
03
Does entity SEO help with ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
It helps them identify you correctly, which is the precondition for being described accurately. Bing's guidelines say clear entity definition improves grounding visibility and citation accuracy, and Ahrefs found branded search and branded anchors correlate with AI visibility at 0.35 to 0.63.
04
Do I need a Wikipedia page for entity SEO?
No. Wikipedia's notability bar is high and most new companies do not meet it. A Wikidata item has a lower bar, and consistent profiles plus Organization schema do most of the work until independent coverage exists.
05
How long does entity SEO take?
The on-site and profile work fits in a week for a small team. Recognition takes longer, because it depends on search engines recrawling your pages and on other sites describing you.
Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, after limiting them in 2023. FAQPage is still valid schema.org. What to keep, remove and write.
GEO is optimizing content to be quoted inside AI answers. The 2023 paper that named it found citations, quotes and statistics lifted visibility 30 to 40%.
