Unlinked brand mentions: find them and turn them into links
Find unlinked brand mentions by searching your exact name in quotes minus your own site, keep the indexed, relevant ones, and ask each author once.

To find unlinked brand mentions, search Google for your exact product name in quotes while excluding your own domain, open each result to check it doesn't already link to you, and keep the mentions on pages that are indexed and relevant. Then ask each author once, briefly, to link the mention to one specific URL.
An unlinked mention is one of the easiest link requests to make, because the author already chose to write about you. It also matters without the link: pages that name your product are part of what AI answer engines read about you. Below is the find-and-ask workflow, the filters that decide which mentions are worth an email, and a note you can adapt.
What is an unlinked brand mention?
An unlinked brand mention is a page on another site that names your product or company in its text but doesn't link to your site. Typical examples are a roundup that lists you as plain text, a newsletter archive that names you, or a blog post quoting your founder. The writer knows you exist; they just didn't add the link.
Your own backlink reports won't show these pages. Search Console's Links report lists links, not mentions, and every backlink tool starts from links it has found. Finding mentions means searching for your name as text.
Do unlinked mentions help SEO and AI visibility?
For classic SEO, a mention without a link passes no link value, so converting it to a link is the gain. For AI answers the mention itself counts. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found brand web mentions, linked or unlinked, had the strongest correlation (0.664) with brand visibility in Google's AI Overviews, ahead of every link metric it measured.
The link metrics in the same study correlated less: Domain Rating at 0.326, referring domains at 0.295 and backlinks at 0.218. Ahrefs notes that correlation is not causation. Ahrefs' Director of Content Marketing, Ryan Law, put the practical reading this way: unlinked mentions "have very little impact on SEO, but a much bigger impact on GEO," because language models learn a brand's standing "from words on the page."
The mechanism on Google's side is simple. Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews and AI Mode, so an indexed page that describes your product is a page those features can draw on. How mentions and links compare for AI visibility is covered in brand mentions vs backlinks for AI.

01
What is an unlinked brand mention?
It is a page on another site that names your product or company in its text without linking to your site. The author has already decided to write about you, so asking them to add a link is a small request.
So a mention is worth having either way, and worth converting when the page is one people read.
How do you find unlinked brand mentions?
Use Google's exact-match and exclusion operators, then check each result by hand. Google's own help describes both: put a phrase "inside quotes" for an exact match, and put a minus sign "in front of a word that you want to leave out." The site: operator limits or, with a minus, excludes a domain.
Search your exact name, excluding your own site: "Acme Invoices" -site:acme.example. Replace the name and domain with yours.
If your name is a common word, add a word that always appears near it: "Acme Invoices" invoicing -site:acme.example.
Exclude sites where a link request makes no sense, one operator each: -site:x.com -site:linkedin.com -site:youtube.com -site:reddit.com.
Search the founder's name and any old product names the same way. Older articles may use a name you've since changed.
Open each result and search the page source for your domain (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F on the view-source page). If it's there, the mention is already linked; drop it.
Log every unlinked mention in a sheet: URL, page title, author, date, where the mention sits, and whether the page is indexed.
For new mentions, set up a Google Alert on the same query. Go to Google Alerts, enter the topic, and use Show options to set how often you get notifications, the types of sites, the language, the region and how many results. You'll get an email whenever Google finds new matching results.
Some backlink tools track mentions too; Ahrefs, for one, advertises a feed of new pages that name your brand. What each checker shows for free is in backlink checkers compared.
Which mentions are worth asking about?
Ask about mentions on pages that are indexed in Google, relevant to what your product does, and written by a person you can reach. A link from a page nobody can find or read is worth little, and a request to a scraper site or a social post goes nowhere.
Check
How
Keep it if
Is the page indexed?
Search Google for the exact page URL
It appears in the results
Is it relevant?
Read the paragraph around the mention
It describes your product or its category
Is the mention accurate?
Read what it says about you
It is right, or you have a correction to offer
Can you reach the author?
Look for a byline, author page or contact page
A named person with a way to write to them
Is it a page people read?
Look at the date, the comments and the site's other posts
It is maintained, not a dead archive
What kind of page is it?
Note the type
An article, review, roundup or resource page, not a forum post, comment or social post
Skip scraper sites that copy other people's pages, and skip user-generated content: Google recommends marking links in comments and forum posts with rel="ugc", and asking a stranger to edit their comment is an odd request.
Which mentions should you ask about first?
Start with the pages that already reach people: the ones ranking in Google for your category's questions and the ones AI answers cite. A link or a correction on a page that ranks or gets quoted is worth more than the same edit on a page nobody visits.
Search Google for your category's main questions, such as "best invoicing tool for freelancers", and note any page in the top ten that mentions you without a link.
Ask ChatGPT with search on, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode the same questions, and open the sources each answer cites. Perplexity says its Perplexity-User agent may visit a page to answer a question and "include a link to the page in its response," so the pages it used are listed with the answer.
Match those URLs against your sheet. Any unlinked mention that also appears in search results or AI citations goes to the top of the list.
Order the rest by when each page was last updated. An author who still maintains a page is the one still editing it.
How do you ask for the link?
Write once, to the author, in four or five sentences. Thank them for the mention, name the page, give the exact URL you want the mention to link to, and stop. Don't ask for keyword anchor text and don't offer anything in exchange, because "exchanging goods or services for links" is on Google's list of link spam.
Pick the destination URL with care. If the article mentions a specific feature, link that feature's page; if it mentions the product in general, your homepage is right. Giving the exact URL removes the only work the author has to do.
A note that gets read:
Subject: Your post on [article title]
Hi [first name],
Thanks for including Acme Invoices in "[article title]". I'm the founder.
If you're open to it, could the mention link to https://acme.example/? Readers who want to try it would land on the signup page.
Either way, thanks for the write-up.
[Your name]
Three rules keep it working:
Send it to the named author, not a generic contact inbox, when you can find them.
Ask once. If there's no reply, leave it; the mention is still on the page for readers and AI answers.
If the mention is wrong, lead with the correction. Fixing an error is a reason to write that helps the author too.
If the author replies that their site doesn't link to products, or that every outbound link carries rel="nofollow", thank them and move on. A nofollow link still sends readers to you, and the mention stays on a page that AI answers can read whatever the site decides about links.
How do you keep the workflow running?
Treat it as a monthly routine. Check your Google Alert emails as they arrive, rerun the exact-match search once a month, and send the notes in one sitting. Record each outcome so you never email the same author twice about the same page.
A tracking sheet needs six columns: page URL, author, date found, date asked, outcome (linked, declined, no reply) and the URL they linked. Over a few months the sheet also tells you who writes about your category, which makes it the starting list for pitching new articles and reviews. The wider plan for a new site's first links is in how to get backlinks for a new website.
Hand the off-page work to someone who does it by hand
LaunchScaler's SEO / GEO boost is done-for-you off-page work, and all of it is by hand. It starts with an audit of your off-page footprint, "where you're cited, where your schema is thin, and how answer engines read you today," then moves to guest placements through "editorial pitches to sites that actually publish, with a link a human approved," and clean-up of lost backlinks and broken citations. The page is explicit that "we never fabricate signals or buy spam links," and every placement and fix is recorded, "linked and checkable." Each project is scoped to your site, from $299. Include your unlinked mentions in the inquiry, and you get a scope and a quote within one business day. Talk to us.
Search Google for your exact name in quotes and exclude your own site, for example "Acme Invoices" -site:acme.example. Then open each result and check the page source for a link to your domain; set up a Google Alert on the same name to catch new mentions.
