How to rank in ChatGPT search: what decides which sites it cites
ChatGPT answers from live search or from what the model already knows. How to get into each: allow OAI-SearchBot, serve HTML, earn listings, then measure.

There are two ways into a ChatGPT answer: live search, where ChatGPT fetches pages and cites them, and what the model already knows from training. To rank in ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot, serve your content in server-rendered HTML, get your product described on the third-party listings ChatGPT leans on, and write pages that state plainly what the product is, who it's for and what it costs. Then measure with real buyer questions, not your brand name.
No one outside OpenAI can see how ChatGPT ranks sources. What is documented is which crawler it uses, what blocks you, and which kinds of sources it tends to cite, and that is enough to act on.
How does ChatGPT decide what to cite?
When ChatGPT searches, it rewrites the question into one or more search queries, retrieves pages through OpenAI's own crawler and its search partners, and cites some of the pages it used. When it doesn't search, it answers from what the model learned in training. The two paths need different work.

How do I get my website to show up in ChatGPT?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and in your firewall, serve your main content in the page's HTML rather than through JavaScript, write pages that state plainly what your product is, who it is for and what it costs, and get listed on the third-party sites ChatGPT cites for your category.
Whether GPTBot may use your content, and how widely your product is described on the open web
OpenAI's help also describes how the search step works: ChatGPT "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" and may send follow-up queries after reading the first results. So the pages it cites are the ones that answer those rewritten, specific queries. Because Microsoft is among its search providers, being indexed by Bing is part of the picture; the does ChatGPT use Bing guide covers that relationship.
Step 1: Can OAI-SearchBot reach your pages?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and let it through your firewall. OpenAI's crawler documentation is direct: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links." It also recommends allowing requests from the IP ranges it publishes at openai.com/searchbot.json.
Keep the bots separate. OpenAI says each setting "is independent of the others," so this robots.txt stays in ChatGPT search while opting out of training:
Changes take time: "it can take ~24 hours from a site's robots.txt update" for its search systems to adjust.
ChatGPT-User, the agent that visits pages when a user asks, "is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search." Use OAI-SearchBot for search opt-outs.
A disallowed page can still show up as a bare link and title if OpenAI learns the URL elsewhere. To keep a page out entirely, use a noindex meta tag, which requires letting the crawler fetch the page.
Then check your firewall. Cloudflare's documentation says that from September 15, 2026, new domains block bots classified as Training or Agent on pages that display ads by default, and block mixed-purpose crawlers under any setting that blocks AI training. Review your AI bot policies under Security Settings in Cloudflare, or the equivalent in your CDN. The OAI-SearchBot vs GPTBot guide covers every OpenAI user agent.
Step 2: Is your content in the HTML ChatGPT receives?
ChatGPT's crawlers read the HTML your server sends and don't run JavaScript. Vercel's December 2024 study of AI crawler traffic found that OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot don't render JavaScript; ChatGPT's crawler fetched JavaScript files in 11.50% of its requests but didn't execute them. A client-rendered page is an empty shell to ChatGPT.
Check it: curl -s https://example.com/pricing | grep -c "a sentence from the page". If the count is zero, the text is added by JavaScript, and ChatGPT never sees it. Server-side rendering, static generation or prerendering fixes it for the pages you want cited.
The same study found ChatGPT's crawler spent 34.82% of its fetches on 404 pages and 14.36% on redirects. Keep URLs stable, redirect retired ones in a single hop, and keep your sitemap limited to live, canonical URLs.
Step 3: Are you on the sources ChatGPT leans on?
ChatGPT cites third-party sites heavily. Yext's analysis of 6.8 million citations across 1.6 million responses found that 48.73% of ChatGPT's citations came from third-party listings such as Yelp, TripAdvisor and MapQuest. The study used location-based consumer queries, so the listings that matter for a software product are the directories and review sites of your own category.
A second study points the same way from a different angle. Profound analyzed 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025 and found Wikipedia held 47.9% of the share among ChatGPT's ten most-cited sources, followed by Reddit at 11.3%, with Forbes, G2 and TechRadar also in the top ten. Across all of ChatGPT's citations, Wikipedia was 7.8%.
What to do with that:
List your product on the directories and review sites buyers in your category use, with the same name, description, pricing and category everywhere.
Earn reviews on those listings from real customers.
Get included in comparison and "best tools for X" articles that answer your buyers' questions.
Answer real questions in communities where your buyers ask them, without advertising.
When ChatGPT names competitors and never you, look at the pages it cites for those answers: listings and articles you aren't on are the gap to close. The guide to AI recommending competitors shows how to find those pages and get onto them.
Step 4: Does your site answer the questions buyers ask?
Write pages that answer specific buyer questions in the first few sentences under a clear heading, and state the basics plainly: what the product is, who it is for, what it costs, and how it compares. ChatGPT rewrites a question into targeted searches, so a page that answers one specific question directly is easier to retrieve and quote than a general homepage.
Research on generative engines supports making the page quotable. The GEO study by Aggarwal and colleagues found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources to a page improved its visibility in generated answers by 30 to 40% on its main metric, while keyword stuffing offered "little to no improvement."
A practical checklist for your key pages:
A one-sentence definition near the top: "Example is a [category] for [audience] that [does what]."
The price and plan names in text, not only in an image or a JavaScript pricing widget.
A comparison page for each competitor buyers ask about, with a table of real differences.
Question headings with the answer in the first 40 to 60 words beneath each.
Figures with their sources, and a visible date for when the page was last updated.
An About page that names the company, the people behind it and where it is based, so the facts an answer repeats about you have a source on your own site.
Step 5: How do you measure whether ChatGPT cites you?
Write 10 questions a buyer would ask before choosing a product like yours, such as "what's the best tool for X" and "X vs Y for small teams," not your brand name. Ask each one in ChatGPT with search on, and record for every answer whether your site is cited, whether your brand is named, and which sources are cited instead. Repeat monthly with the same wording.
Brand-name questions tell you little. ChatGPT will usually find your site when asked about you by name; the question is whether it finds you when a buyer doesn't know you exist yet.
Question
Run date
Your site cited?
Brand named?
Sources cited instead
best [category] tool for startups
[competitor] alternatives
how to [job your product does]
Answers vary between runs, so one run is an anecdote and a monthly trend is data. For traffic, OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs, so filter your analytics by that source to see visits it sends. The measuring AI visibility guide covers the tracking sheet in full.
Find out which engines cite you, and why not
The free and the paid checks split along the two halves of this article. Run the free scan first, then open the full audit from your report. The free scan needs only your address and no account, and its 156 checks include whether robots.txt or your firewall blocks OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and whether your main content is in the server HTML.
The full audit is a one-time $19 for your domain, and it never expires. It puts 10 questions buyers in your category ask to 7 answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot), reads all 70 answers, and shows which engines cite you and which competitors they name instead. It also opens every check to its evidence and exact fix, and adds the checks the free run can't make, including third-party review and directory presence, Reddit presence, Organization schema and freshness signals.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
No. OpenAI says its bot settings are independent: GPTBot governs whether content may be used to train its models, while OAI-SearchBot governs appearing in ChatGPT search answers. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
03
How long does ChatGPT take to reflect a robots.txt change?
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a site's robots.txt update for its systems to adjust for search results.
04
Can I pay to rank in ChatGPT?
OpenAI's publisher guidance describes no paid route into ChatGPT search results. Its advice is to allow OAI-SearchBot so your content can be discovered, surfaced, cited and linked.
05
How do I know if ChatGPT cites my site?
Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, with search on, and record which sources each answer cites. In analytics, ChatGPT search referrals carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, so you can see visits it sends.
